How to turn Firefox into Google Chrome

September 9, 2008 3:09 pm

Looking at the stats for my blog, the Web browser from Google does not seem to have attracted some of you who read too :-) Ok the time is still short, but making a statistic on the last weeks Chrome stands as the third most used browser at 5.45% against 46.64% to 41.19% for Firefox and IE.

How to say .. Chrome dear to Nissardo There `tripe for cats. :-)

But at the same time I am sure that many you're saying that some functionality of Chrome are very nice, the look & feel also, but you can not think of leaving your beloved and trusted Firefox.

Well, this article is for you! :-)

In fact, thanks to Firefox extensions is possible with a few simple steps to turn it into something that resembles a lot to Chrome. Obviously you will not have the same lightness and the same performance (they have to wait for Firefox 3.1 scheduled for the end of the year).

We start looking aesthetic Chromifox
Chromifox

A coat of Chrome for Firefox. Say hello to Chromifox, a bright and soft blue theme for Firefox 3 on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, inspired by the theme from the Google Chrome web browser.

In practice is simply a theme for Firefox (also 3.0) that emulates the graphic style of Chrome. The tab (of course) are still under the bar, and no functionality is added.

Turning to the functionality.

The download bar. I read from different parts of that to manage your downloads directly into the page display and functionality is one of the more appreciated by the public. Not to say .. but I is what I had it even for Firefox 2 :)
One of the extensions that I use is in fact download bar

Download status bar

This plugin is being "taken" in the status bar of Firefox to view your downloads in progress and easily access them once completed.
As I said before .. this plugin has existed for well 5 years ;-)

One of the functionality that I found more cute is the "new tab page": When you open a new tab (CTRL + T on your keyboard lovers like me) instead of getting a useless blank page you get a series of possibility of navigation, including bookmarks, the last open sites and a section of history and bookmarks.
Ignore the existence of Speed Extention Deal in practice does the same thing. Let us see graphically:

Speed Deal

In reality the original idea comes from Opera, and even here is that Chrome has innovated that much ...

Domain Highlights: If you look at the address bar of Chrome you will see that the domain you are accessing is in bold, while the rest of the address is not. This functionality (which may seem like a cabbage) can be very useful to avoid falling into a trap of phishing.
The same thing (and much, much more) makes the extension Locationbar2, and does so for about a year :-)
Domain highlight
The more functionality to Chrome decanted from the world of traditional media and `l 'Application shortcut. Why I have specified the traditional media? Why does it take to be still in the prehistory of computing to think that this functionality is really a "new". Clearly, if we stick to PR (press releases) Biggie is easy to fall into the trap .. you can start to think that Chrome will be able to emulate remote applications .. short, the famous Google OS which is so much talk .. But you who read my books and computer applications you know a little more to not fall into the trap. This is a functionality for marketing .. ie you create so much hype around anything (in my time there was talk of vaporware). The Application shortcut is not simply the ability to create a chrome shortcut to the desktop itself with command line parameters that hide the top bar.
Obviously the same thing you can get with Firefox through TECHNOLOGY (technology?!? Sometimes use words too big ...) Prism and to its extension:
`here just hours to go under the Tools menu and find a nice" Convert Website to Application ".
Prism
We come to a functionality that I already mentioned in my previous review of Chrome: l 'Incognito Browsing. Navigate a site without that leaves no trace on the local PC is a functionality which can be useful if you share the computer with others (or if you use your office PC to surf the waters not too lawful or appropriate for your environment ). Firefox extension I found long ago that "promises" to remove all traces of navigation when you close the tab. Unfortunately I have never worked. `But there is always the alternative Stealther, a Firefox extension that allows you with a simple shortcut to enable / disable mode` "incognito".
Stealther

The main difference with Chrome's Incognito mode is that you can have for Chrome mode is limited to one page, and with this extension you put in Stealther mode all the pages .. sincerely should go more than good for everybody :-) The last feature that you would propose to add to your Firefox takes up one of the ideas behind Chrome, but no `achieve 100%. Chrome integrates the address bar all the engines of "research" of sites visited (provided you use the site search at least once). Basically if you use the site search "The Nissardo", then you will just write `ilni bar of Chrome for automatically a" Search on the Nissardo. "
This functionality does not yet exist in Firefox, even using an extension, but `you can use the search box of Firefox related to the shortcut you want. Definitely will arrive `a` extension that will make this functionality even more easy to use.

Just not to take too much credit, the basic idea for this post I picked up by Lifehacker, like all the pictures I posted.

Add another link, without changing the post Why is high in beta: Chrome Package extension that allows you to have the tabs above the bar. I say high in beta Why many have had problems using it and uninstall it. If you want to try do it at your own risk, and remember to backup your profile before.

I tried some add-ons with firefox on mac and for the first crash I'm experiencing terrible.
Even reinstalling does not fix and I soon as I open crashes. Drudge add-ons ... :-(

Tell me that you had a backup of your profile ...
The only solution is to delete the profile (or create another). What add-on sends you crash? The theme?!?!

Yes, I think it's the theme. I had to remove firefox completely and reinstall the application to make it work.

Hello Francis, sorry for the delay but I had taken a little vacation :-)

Correct is the place to include the link you mentioned, but while here they are:

Download Statusbar Firefox extension and
Speed Dial extension.

Both should work with your version of Firefox.
