How to turn Firefox into Google Chrome

September 9, 2008 3:09 pm

Looking at the statistics for my blog, the web browser from Google seems to have attracted too sure that you read :-) Ok the time is still short, but making a statistical Chrome last week stands as the third most used browser at 5.45% against 46.64% 41.19% Firefox and IE.

How to say .. Chrome dear to Nissardo there's no tripe for cats. :-)

But at the same time I'm sure there were many saying that some functionality of Chrome are very nice, the look and feel too, but you can not think of leaving your beloved and trusted Firefox.

Well, this article is for you! :-)

In fact, thanks to Firefox extensions is possible with a few simple steps to transform it into something that resembles Chrome. Obviously you will not have the same lightness and the same performance (for this you have to wait for Firefox 3.1 by the end of the year).

We start looking aesthetic Chromifox
Chromifox

A coat of Chrome for Firefox. Say hello to Chromifox, a bright and soft blue theme for Firefox 3 on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X Inspired by the theme from the Google Chrome web browser.

In practice is simply a theme for Firefox (also 3.0) that emulates the look and feel of Chrome. The tab (of course) are still under the bar, and no functionality is added.

Turning to the functionality.

The download bar. I read different parts of that to manage your downloads directly to the page display and functionality is one of the most appreciated by the public. Not to say .. but I is what I had it even for Firefox 2 :)
One of the extensions I use is in fact downloads Bar

download status bar

This plugin is "appropriate" in the status bar of Firefox to view the current download and easily access them once completed.
As I said before .. this plugin has existed for 5 years ;-)

One of the functionality that I found more cute is the "new tab page": When you open a new tab (Ctrl + T keyboard lovers like me) instead of getting a useless blank page you get a series of possibility of navigation, including bookmarks, the last open sites and a section of history and bookmarks.
Ignore the existence of Speed Extention Deal in practice does the same thing. Let us see graphically:

Speed Deal

In reality the original idea is from Opera, so here is that Chrome has not innovated that much ...

Domain Highlights: If you look at the address bar of Chrome you will see that the domain you are accessing is in bold, while the rest of the address is not. This functionality (which may seem like a cabbage) can be very useful to avoid falling into a phishing trap.
The same thing (and much, much more) makes the extension Locationbar2 , and about a year ago :-)
Domain highlight
The most touted functionality of Chrome from the world of traditional media is the 'Application shortcut. Why should I specify traditional media? Why does it take to be even to prehistoric science to think that this functionality is really a "new". Clearly, if we stick to PR (press releases) Biggie is easy to fall into the trap .. you can begin to think that Chrome is able to emulate remote applications .. in short, the famous Google OS which is much talk .. But you who read me the information and applications they know a little more to not fall into the trap. This is a functionality for marketing .. ie you create so much hype around anything (in my time there was talk of vaporware). The Application shortcut is not simply the ability of chrome to create the shortcut on the desktop itself with command line parameters that hide the top bar.
Obviously you can get the same thing with Firefox, thanks to technologies (technology?!? Sometimes use words too big ...) Prism and to its extension :
`here just now go into the Tools menu and find a nice" Convert Website to Application ".
Prism
We come to a functionality that I already mentioned in my previous review of Chrome: the 'Incognito Browsing. Explore this site without leaving any trace on the local PC is a functionality that can be useful if you share your computer with others (or if you use your office PC to surf the waters not too lawful or appropriate for your environment ). Firefox extension I found long ago that "promised" to remove all traces of surfing when you close the tab. Unfortunately I have never worked. `But there is always the alternative Stealther , a Firefox extension that allows you with a simple shortcut to enable / disable mode `" incognito ".
Stealther

The main difference with the Incognito mode in Chrome for Chrome is that it may be the mode confined to a single page, but with this extension you put in Stealther mode all pages .. sincerely should go more than good for everyone :-) The last functionality that I propose to add to your Firefox takes one of the ideas behind Chrome, but not `made of 100%. Chrome integrates the address bar all engines "search" of sites visited (provided you use the site search at least once). Basically if you use the site search "The Nissardo", then here just write `ilni bar of Chrome automatically for a" Search on the Nissardo.
This functionality does not yet exist in Firefox, even using an extension, but `you can use the search box of firefox related to the shortcut you want. Definitely arrive `a` extension that will make this functionality even more user friendly.

Just to not take on too much, the basic idea for this post I've picked up by Lifehacker , like all the pictures I posted.

Add another link, without changing the post why that is high in beta: Chrome Package extension that allows you to have the tabs above the bar. I say `high in beta because many have had problems using it and uninstall it. If you want to try do it at your own risk, and remember to backup your profile before.

I tried some add-ons with firefox on mac and for the first'm experiencing tremendous crash.
Even reinstalling does not solve it and I just crash open. Damn add-ons ... :-(

Say you had a backup of your profile ...
The only solution is to delete the profile (or create another.) What add-ons you crashed? The theme?!?!

Yes, I think it's the theme. I had to remove firefox completely and reinstall the application to make it work.

Hello Francis, sorry for the delay but I had taken a bit of holiday :-)

Is the correct post to include the links you mentioned, but while here they are:

Download Statusbar Firefox extension and
Speed Dial extension .

Both should work with your version of firefox.
